Your house is not just a home; it’s your home. When it comes to tailoring it to meet your needs, sometimes it’s worth spending a little more money on certain features and accessories. This month, R Lucas Construction and Design President and CEO Ron Lucas shares details about some of his favorite splurges:
1. Built-In Coffee Makers
For coffee lovers, a built-in coffee maker is a must-have. We installed one by Jenn-Air for a recent client. The device grinds its own beans, and holds several liters of water.
2. Microwave Oven Drawers
We include microwave oven drawers in about 75 percent of our kitchens these days. Sharp, Viking, and other high-end brands make models that mount in base cabinets and open like a regular drawer. They can preheat a meal, or cook something from start to finish. They’re also easily accessible for people with mobility issues.
3. Thermostatically-Controlled Water Valves
These valves maintain and limit mixed hot water to a desired, selectable temperature. Thus, there is no moving the handle up and down to get the temperature just right each time you take a shower. These valves are not only convenient; they also save water.
4. Oversized Showers
Large tubs in master bathrooms seem to be decreasing in popularity, because they take up a lot of space and aren’t inexpensive. We are removing many of the large master bathroom tubs in existing homes, and installing large showers in their places.
5. Hand Showers
These days, we include at least one hand sprayer in each new shower, and it’s not necessarily for washing people. Instead, it takes the place of the cup kept in showers to throw water on the walls while cleaning.
6. Energy Savers
More and more clients are interested in upgrades, such as LED lights, better windows, foam insulation, and other energy savers. They’re only “splurges” in the sense they cost a bit more than standard items. However, these types of things pay for themselves in a relatively short period of time, so we always like to consider them as we put projects on the drawing board.
